En réalité : de la modalisation à l’organisation du discours

Our paper aims at identifying the syntactic, semantic and discourse functions of en realité (lit. in reality) in contemporary French. En réalité shows two different realizations in our corpus (150 occurrences drawn from the newspaper Le Monde): either it constitutes an intraphrastic adjunct encoding a circumstantial complement (ER1), or it constitutes an extraphrastic adjunct encoding a sentence operator (ER2). Most occurrences of ER2 can be regarded as encoding an evidential modal localizing the source of evidence in the knowledge of reality and presupposing the existence of an alternative source evidence, different from reality and therefore fallacious. This presupposition led many authors to consider ER2 as a marker of rectification. We show that ER is not intrinsically either an opposition or a reformulation connective. When ER2 appears linearly at the left of the sentence, it can be analyzed as an abstract discourse localizer, serving a framing rather than a connective function for the organization of discourse.

L’étude porte sur l’usage de en réalité en français écrit contemporain. En réalité présente deux réalisations dans un corpus de 150 emplois extraits du quotidien Le Monde: soit il constitue un ajout endophrastique (ER1) encodant un circonstanciel ; soit il constitue un ajout exophrastique (ER2) encodant un adverbial d’énoncé. ER2 constitue dans la plupart des occurrences un modal évidentiel localisant la source d’évidence dans la connaissance de la réalité et présupposant l’existence d’une source alternative à la réalité et donc fautive. Cette supposition explique pourquoi ER2 est souvent considéré comme un marqueur de rectification. Nous montrons toutefois que ER2 n’est intrinsèquement ni un connecteur oppositif, ni un connecteur reformulatif. ER2 peut parfois fonctionner, lorsqu’il apparait en tête de phrase, comme un localisateur énonciatif abstrait assurant ainsi une fonction cadrative, plutôt que connective, à l’organisation du discours.
