De la dette et de la difficulté d'éditer des compilations de sermons médiévaux

Abstract : The medieval sermon as a literary genre is undoubtedly relevant to the notion of debt and borrowing. The distinction between debt and borrowing lies in the fact that the former stems from the latter : taking out a loan implies being indebted, beholden, obliged to someone. Debt is often equated to want, the lack of whatever you need to borrow. One should not be surprised to find severe moral judgement expressed in sermons, which are prone to condemn those running into debt. They teach that what burdens a man or a woman the most is the debt to Christ, who « gave His life to save humankind ». Still, sermons result from borrowings, not always admitted yet skilfully compiled, made by some lettered clerics aiming at moral edification through the use of well-proven exempla. The authors of medieval sermons frequently cited their sources, though partially at times. However others unscrupulously took from various written sources, and to fulfill their sacerdotal mission, priests would compile diverse sermons into one manuscript. They would also go as far as to appropriate whatever material they needed from other compilations, which makes the editor’s task harder. The article focuses on the technical aspect of the editorial work that consists in tracing back the origin of textual debt in sermons. Ariane Lainé examines the revisions of John Mirk’s Festial (late 14th century), a text found in two manuscripts, British Library Harley MS 2247 and Royal MS 18.B.XV.
