Abstract : The Mémoires d’Anne-Marie de Moras, published in 1739 by novelist Mouhy, takes up a criminal case of the years 1737 to 1739, when the Count of Courbon and his accomplices were charged with bride-kidnapping of the young narrator. She presents her version to a benevolent friend of hers and at the same time to every reader in order to obtain a more comprehensive judgement than the general one. This rewriting of judicial texts speaks of coincidence from its various angles, but quite generally reveals it as so-called coincidence and plot with Anne-Marie as the victim. If her story does support the charge of bride-kidnapping, the allusions to dramatic art, which must be allocated to the author rather than to the narrator, stretch her mother’s part. The conditions of constraint writing that the text exposes from the very beginning might explain this proceeding, which aims at preserving oneself from life contingency reason. Having failed during the events, reason succeeds in guiding their narrative at least.
