Excavaciones arqueológicas en Cidade Velha (Cabo Verde). Balance de tres años de investigación

Abstract : Between the years 1999 and 2001, the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation (AECI), sponsored several archaeological excavations in partnership with the Ministry of Culture of Cape Verde, focused on preserving the ruins of the ancient capital of the islands, Ribeira Grande, the current Cidade Velha. The excavations were part of a recovery and enhancement project of the historical site, as a way to revalue this important resource for local and foreign tourism. The actions carried out in key points of the city ruins complemented the International Safeguarding Project of the Historic and Artistic Patrimony from Cape Verde. The excavations in the Royal Fortress of San Felipe and the Convent of San Francisco were noteworthy. They served to emphasize the importance of the city between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries, highlighting the good conservation of their remains and the wide repertoire of archaeological materials connected with the local history knew until then only through written sources. Cidade Velha was valorized by the outcomes and declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 2009.
