Le tribunal des ouvriers : enquête aux prud'hommes de Vierzon

Abstract : During six months, from January to June 2008, at a rate of one day a week, I read the minutes of the Labor Court Board of Vierzon (Cher). More specifically, I paid attention to judgments which decide on the requests from 1977 to 2006 in the metallurgic affairs ruled on the merits. In their very large majority, these affairs refered to male workers. When it was possible, I took note of the main characteristics of each of the relevant decisions : date of judgment, litigant's name and surname, position held, etc. Besides, every time I thought it was necessary, I noted a part or the whole of the transcription from the deliberations. During the twenty-two actual days I read these minutes, I gathered 350 pages of handwritten notes. From this material, I singled out 378 decisions. This consulting allowed me to understand the transformation process of working class which looks, at the scale of Vierzon, like a kind of extinction of the large scale industry's voices. At least, it was my feeling when I read, the thousands of archive pages. In concrete words, the present work is organized around two types of analysis of the data collected from the judiciary corpus : a quantitative analysis (chapter 1) and a qualitative analysis. The latter one covers the reasons of conflict (chapter 2), the causes of redundances (chapter 3) economical redundances (chapter 4) and the social conditions in which collective conflicts take place (chapter 5). Ex-cursus follow chapter 2 and 4, each of them quotes again, in order to clarify it, a biographical testimony directly (Roger and Aline) or indirectly (Ilan) related to the functioning of industrial tribunals.
