Abstract : The knowledge of pond volume at regional and national scale would allow a better management of emptying rhythms and fight against eutrophication. Eleven bathymetrical maps were surveyed in Limousin region, letting a mathematical regression which relates area and volume. It comes into operation with our new database listing all the 250,000 French ponds. Applied to the two French crystalline highlands (“Armoricain” and “Central”) of the western central France, the result is an estimate of the regional pond water volume of about 760 million cubic metres. If extrapolated to the manmade and fish ponds all over France, the water volume would be about 2.24 billion cubic metres.
